The
National Library:
The National
Library, established in 1909, has evolved with the nation over the
course of the past century, standing as an everlasting monument to the
old days which brought forth the new.

Since the founding of the PRC in October 1949, the Library has
been growing so much that it now has a collection of over 22 million
books including many modern documents such as AV materials, CD-ROMs,
and databases for many disciplines. It is still increasing annually by
600,000 to 700,000 titles. The National Library of China lies in the
western suburbs of Beijing. The Library grounds encompass an area of
7.42 hectares with a floor space of 170,000 square meters. 6,000 to
7,000 readers visit the Library's 30-odd reading rooms daily. Complete
modernized services are available, including microfiche copying,
Xeroxing, AV services, CD-ROM retrieval, academic lectures, and
cultural and academic exhibitions.

The National Library of China adheres to the principle of giving
top priority to "maintaining the library’s collection,
professionalism, service and user-satisfaction". The Library provides
reading space in the library, lending services and reference
consulting. The Library provides consultation in the fields of
philosophy, social science, law, science and technology as well as
selective or special literature research and offers information
services such as document retrieval.
