IBM & HSP discuss cooperation
Ma Lin, deputy head of Haidian District and president of HSP, met
with IBM’s chief of overseas operations on Jul.29, 1999. The two
parties discussed a range of topics, focusing on ways to increase
cooperation. IBM executives presented their proposal for IBM to
promote China’s software industry. Ma Lin discussed the future
development of HSP emphasizing the government’s backing for the
establishment of a National Software Park. They exchange of views
during the 3 hour meeting was considered of great benefit to both
sides.
Three more websites put into operation
Three new websites, for Zhongguancun Science Instruments and
Facilities Service, Zhonguancun Communal Scientific Research
Information Service and Zhongguancun Specialists Consulting Service
respectively, were put into operation on Aug.10, 1999. They are an
answer to the government’s call for greater integration of research
and industry. The newly built websites are a breakthrough for
connecting people and resources. Thanks to the implementation of the
latest technology it’s now really possible to let your fingers do the
walking.
Ground is broken on the first free enterprise high-tech
manufacturing facility in the HSP.
Marking the start of free enterprise high-tech parks, construction
of the Legend Computer Building began on Nov.4, 1999.
Liu Qi, mayor of Beijing, and Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. The
building will cost 280 million yuan and is to be completed by the end
of next year. It’s expected to have an annual production of 2 million
computers making it the top producer in north China.
Eight British Financial Organizations tours the HSP
Organized by the British Embassy to China, a delegation of the
chief representatives from the eight largest British financial
organizations, including Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and
Charter Bank, visited the HSP on Nov.16, 1999. The delegation
expressed great interest in investing in HSP after touring the
Tsinghua Pioneer Park and Yongyou Software Group and all parties look
forward to further cooperation.
Pioneer Park starts in the HSP
HSP held a ceremony on Jan.3, 2000 for the opening of the Zhongguancun
Innovation Tower. The building is the largest project to date of the
HSP’s high-tech enterprise incubation system for the regions
innovation base. The building has space for 60 to 70 enterprises. So
far 15 enterprises have moved in to take advantage of preferential
policies and start up capital available for the residents. “This new
building will surely have a positive impact on modernization in HSP.”
Said one HSP official, “accelerating the creation of the world’s best
companies.”
Center Director visits HSP
Henry Rowan, Director of the Asian-pacific Research Center of
Stanford University, visited HSP on Feb.24, 2000. Leaders from the HSP
gave the guest a brief lecture on the development of HSP and then
shared experiences with him. As a prominent researcher at the Commerce
Institute of Stanford University, Henry Rowan has profound insight
into both the Asian economy and the system of development of high-tech
industries in Silicon Valley. He delivered a speech--- “Lessons
learned from overcoming the obstacles in establishing Silicon Valley”,
in which he discussed the reasons for the development of high-tech
industries such as access to venture capital and human resources. He
also talked about some problems China might encounter developing
high-tech industries.
German Counselor seeks cooperation in the HSP
Wihents, the Scientific and Technological Counselor from the German
Embassy to China visited HSP on Mar.20, 2000 to investigate
opportunities for German investment in HSP. Wihents visited the
Tongfang Company of Tsinghua University and discussed possibilities
for cooperation in testing technology. The Tongfang Company expressed
interest building such relationships.
IT Festival enjoying its third anniversary
On May 10, 2000, Zhongguancun IT Festival kicked off the big
opening ceremony celebrating its third anniversary. Ma Lin, deputy
head of Haidian District and President of HSP, presided over the
ceremony, expressing his hope that the Zhongguancun Science Park will
continue its role as an active developer of China’s knowledge-based
economy. The ceremony was well attended with guests from all over
China and all over the world.
Vice Premier Li Lanqing visits the HSP
Li Lanqing, member of the Standing Committee of the Political
Bureau of the Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council
visited the HSP on Jun. 8, 2000. Accompanied by Jia Qingling,
Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Government and Liu Qi, Mayor of
Beijing, Li Lanqing toured the HSP and visited the Haidian Science and
Technology Building. He also visited the office of the Digital Park
Online Working System. Li said that he hoped the pace of construction
could be increased so that significant change could be seen over the
next three years.
E-government put into full operation
The new e-government of the HSP went fully on-line on April 1rst,
2001. A significant change from the traditional mode of government
administration, e-government will allow all government adminstration
to be conducted on-line creating a much more efficient delivery of
service. This should set a new standard for governmental use of IT
throughout the world.
IT Festival celebrates its fourth birthday
The annual CHINA (BEIJING) INTERNATIONAL HIGH-TECH INDUSTRIES WEEK
(CBHT) was held in Beijing along with the opening ceremony of
Zhongguancun IT Festival, held on May 8th, 2000. A large-scale event,
the first three sessions included the new high-tech exhibition & trade
fair, a series of special lectures & seminars, trade & business talks
on high-tech achievements as well as other activities. It cast the
spotlight on achievements in the fields of electronics, computer,
telecommunication and network technology, bioengineering, medicine and
health products, environmental protection, and new energy resources.
